This guide is for fathers raising children on their own. Custodial single dads, dads with joint custody who carry most of the costs, and men who became primary caregivers suddenly after a separation, a death, or a change in a custody order.
There are around two million single-father households in the United States. Almost every assistance guide written for single parents is addressed to mothers. That is not because the programs exclude men. It is because the content follows the bigger audience.
Nearly every program below is gender neutral in law. If you have custody, you qualify on the same terms a mother would. The gap is information, not eligibility.

WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. The name suggests fathers are excluded. They are not, but the rules are specific and worth getting right.
A father can apply for WIC on behalf of an eligible infant or child under five. He can bring the child to the appointment, receive the benefits, and use them. What a father cannot receive is the pregnant or postpartum category, which is tied to the mother’s own health.
So if you are raising a two year old on your own, WIC is open to you. Many single fathers never apply because the name tells them not to. A few states, Pennsylvania among them, ask non-parent caregivers to show legal guardianship. Most do not. Beyond that one category, there is no major federal assistance program that pays mothers and not fathers.
Programs to Apply For First
Order matters here. Some programs qualify you automatically for others, so applying in the right sequence saves weeks.
1. SNAP
Apply for this first, always. Not only because food assistance is usually the most immediate need, but because SNAP enrolment is the master key. Being on SNAP gives you automatic eligibility for Lifeline phone and internet service, free school meals for your children, discounted internet from several providers, and in many states LIHEAP and reduced utility rates.
Custody is what matters for household size. Whoever the child lives with more than half the time counts that child in their household. If you share custody roughly evenly, only one parent can claim the child, and it is usually the one who provides the majority of meals.

2. Medicaid or CHIP for the children
Children qualify for coverage at much higher household incomes than adults do. In most states children remain eligible well above the adult threshold, often at twice the federal poverty level or more, through CHIP.
This catches a lot of working fathers off guard. You may earn too much for your own Medicaid coverage while your children still qualify comfortably. Apply for them regardless of what you assume about your own eligibility.
For adults in states that expanded Medicaid, the 2026 limit is 138% of the federal poverty level, which is $22,025 a year for one person and $45,540 for a household of four. Our Medicaid guide covers the state by state differences.
3. The Earned Income Tax Credit
This is the largest single cash transfer available to most working single fathers, and it is claimed on a tax return rather than applied for. The maximum EITC was worth up to $8,046 on returns filed in 2026.
Two things go wrong here constantly. First, fathers who earn too little to owe tax assume they do not need to file. The EITC is refundable, meaning you receive it as a payment even when you owe nothing, so not filing means not receiving it. Second, in shared custody arrangements only one parent can claim a child for EITC purposes, and it must be the parent the child lived with for more than half the year. Disagreements here trigger IRS review and delay both parents’ refunds.
4. Child care assistance
The Child Care and Development Fund subsidises care for working parents and parents in education or training. It is administered by states under different names, so search for your state’s programme rather than the federal one.
Two practical notes. Waiting lists are common and often long, so join one even if your situation might change. And many states give priority to parents who are working or in training, which is precisely the position most single fathers are in.
5. Housing
Section 8 housing choice vouchers do not favour either parent. What matters is income relative to Area Median Income in your county, not the federal poverty level, and family size.
Waiting lists are the real barrier. Most are closed most of the time and open with little notice. Almost every programme asks you to prove the children live with you. Mothers are rarely asked twice. Fathers frequently are.
Have these ready before you apply, not after a caseworker requests them: the custody order or parenting plan, school enrolment records listing your address, medical records naming you as the responsible parent, and mail addressed to the children at your address.
This is not a rule written against fathers. It is a caseworker seeing an unusual household composition and asking for verification. Having the documents ready turns a three-week delay into a same-day approval.
Child support counts as income
If you receive child support, most programmes count it as unearned income. If you pay it, most programmes let you deduct it. Report it either way. Unreported child support is one of the most common causes of overpayment notices, and those get recovered from future benefits.
Informal custody arrangements
Plenty of single fathers have custody in practice without a court order. That is workable but it makes verification harder. School records, medical records and a signed statement from the other parent all help. If you can obtain a formal order, it makes every future application simpler.

Free and reduced school meals
Automatic if you receive SNAP or TANF. Otherwise apply through the school district directly. This is one of the highest-value programmes relative to the effort of applying, and many districts now serve meals free to all students regardless of income.
Lifeline phone and internet

Help with heating and cooling bills. Eligibility is usually 150% of the federal poverty level though states set their own rules. The critical thing about LIHEAP is that funding is fixed and states stop taking applications when it runs out, so applying early in the season matters more than in any other programme. Head Start and Early Head Start
Free early education for children from birth to five in eligible households. Enrolment is not automatic and slots are limited, so apply directly through your local programme rather than waiting to be contacted.
What to Be Careful Of
Search for help as a single father and you will find sites advertising grants for single fathers with an application fee. There is no federal grant programme that pays cash to individual parents, and no legitimate assistance programme charges you to apply.
The pattern is consistent: an urgent tone, a limited-time claim, a processing fee, and no named programme you can look up independently.
