The Honest Answer First
There is no federal hardship grant program for individuals. No government office reviews personal applications and sends checks to people going through a rough patch, and every website or social media message claiming otherwise is either misinformed or trying to collect your information.
That is worth saying plainly, because “hardship grant” is one of the most scam-saturated phrases in this entire field.
What does exist is a patchwork of real emergency help: one-time cash payments through state programs, charity emergency funds, hospital financial assistance that most patients never ask about, and employer hardship funds sitting unused. None of it is a single grant, but together it covers most of what people searching for one actually need.
This guide maps all of it, organised by the bill you are trying to pay.
One-Time Cash That Is Actually Government Money

TANF emergency and diversion payments
Most people know TANF as a monthly benefit for families with children. Fewer know that many states also offer one-time emergency or diversion payments, a single lump sum meant to resolve a crisis so a family never needs ongoing assistance at all.
These can cover rent arrears, a car repair that keeps you employed, utility shut-offs, or moving costs. Amounts and rules vary widely by state, and the payment often comes with a condition that you do not claim monthly TANF for a period afterwards, so read the terms before accepting.
Ask your state assistance office specifically about “diversion assistance” or “emergency assistance”, using those words. Our TANF guide covers what each state offers.
General Assistance
Some states and counties run small cash programs for adults without children, who are excluded from TANF. Where it exists, General Assistance is modest but real, and it is applied for through the same local assistance office.
Crisis funds inside other programs
LIHEAP has a crisis component for shut-offs and empty heating fuel tanks. Emergency rental assistance comes and goes with funding cycles. These are not called hardship grants, but they are one-time money for exactly the situations the phrase describes. Our LIHEAP guide covers the energy side.
Charity Emergency Funds
This is where most fast, real help lives, and it works differently than people expect.
The Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities and local churches all run emergency assistance funds that pay rent, utility bills, prescriptions and food. Three things to know:
- They usually pay the biller directly, not you. A rent payment goes to your landlord, a utility payment to the company. That is normal and legitimate.
- Funds are local and run out. The same organisation may have money this week and none next week. If one branch says no, another town over may say yes.
- You do not need to be religious to receive help from faith-based charities.
Community action agencies are the secular backbone of the same system. Every county in the country is covered by one, they administer several of the programs on this page, and they often hold small flexible emergency funds of their own. If you only make one call from this guide, make it this one or 211.
Modest Needs is one of the few organisations that genuinely makes grants to individuals by application. Its Self-Sufficiency Grants target working households facing one unexpected expense that threatens to tip them into crisis. Competitive, but real and free to apply.

If your hardship is a medical bill, this section may be worth more than everything else on the page.
Nonprofit hospitals are legally required to have a financial assistance policy, sometimes called charity care, that reduces or eliminates bills for patients below certain income levels. Many forgive bills entirely for lower-income patients and discount them well up the income scale.
Hospitals rarely volunteer this. You have to ask, usually through the billing department, and you can ask after the bill arrives, even after it has gone to collections in many cases. Request the financial assistance application in writing.
Employer and union hardship funds
Many large employers run employee relief funds that make genuine grants to staff facing emergencies, funded by the company or by colleague donations. Airlines, retailers, hospital systems and universities commonly have them. Unions often run parallel funds. HR departments do not advertise these well, so ask directly whether an employee assistance or relief fund exists.
Utility company hardship programs
Separate from LIHEAP, most large utilities run their own hardship funds, often charity-administered, that grant money toward arrears once a year per household. Call your utility and ask for their hardship or customer assistance fund by name.

How to Spot the Scam Version
Because this search term attracts more fraud than almost any other, the patterns are worth knowing cold:
- Any fee to apply is a scam. No legitimate grant, government or charity, charges an application, processing or release fee.
- Grants do not find you. Messages saying you were selected for a hardship grant, especially from a friend’s hacked social media account, are the single most common version of this fraud.
- No legitimate program pays via gift cards or asks you to receive money and send part of it onward.
- “Government grant agents” do not exist. Every real program on this page is applied to directly and free.
- A specific dollar figure in an ad, like a $6,400 subsidy or $9,000 hardship grant, is a lead-generation lure, not a program.
Our guide to what real government money looks like covers these patterns in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are hardship grants for individuals real?
There is no federal hardship grant program. Real one-time help exists through TANF emergency payments, charity funds, hospital financial assistance, utility hardship funds and a small number of nonprofits like Modest Needs that make genuine individual grants.
How do I get emergency money from the government?
Through existing programs rather than a grant: TANF emergency or diversion payments for families, General Assistance for some adults without children, LIHEAP crisis funds for energy shut-offs, and disaster assistance after federally declared events.
Is there a government hardship grant application?
No single application exists, and any site offering one, especially for a fee, is fraudulent. Each real program above has its own free application through the agency or charity that runs it.
Can a hospital really forgive my medical bill?
Nonprofit hospitals are required to have financial assistance policies and many forgive or heavily discount bills based on income. You must ask, the hospital will not offer, and you can apply after the bill arrives.
What is a TANF diversion payment?
A one-time lump sum some states offer instead of monthly TANF, meant to resolve a single crisis such as rent arrears or a car repair. It often comes with a waiting period before you can claim monthly benefits, so check the terms.
Someone messaged me saying I qualify for a hardship grant. Is it real?
No. Grants do not find people. This message pattern, frequently sent from hacked accounts of people you know, is the most common form of grant fraud. Do not send money, fees or personal details.
How fast can any of this actually pay?
Charity funds and utility hardship programs can move within days when funded. TANF emergency payments typically take longer. Hospital financial assistance applies retroactively to the bill rather than paying cash forward.
