Which States Are Sending Checks in 2026 (And Which Claims Are Fake)

The Short Version

There is no new federal stimulus check in 2026. The last Economic Impact Payments went out in 2021, and the window to claim missed ones has closed.

What is real: several states are sending their own money right now. Rebates, property tax relief, energy payments and dividends, some of them mailing this month. The largest single programme reaches 8.2 million people.

This page lists every active programme we could verify, what it pays, who qualifies, and when it arrives. It also covers the viral check amounts circulating on social media, most of which are real programmes described wrongly.

State Payments Active Right Now

State Programme Amount Timing
New York POWER energy rebate $100–$200 Mailing late September through December 2026
New Jersey ANCHOR Up to $1,750 Payments began 15 September 2026
New Jersey StayNJ + Senior Freeze Up to $6,500 combined cap Quarterly instalments
Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend + energy relief $1,200 total 1 October and 22 October 2026
Colorado PTC rebate (seniors and disabled) Up to $1,178/year Rolling instalments
Colorado TABOR refund Roughly $40–$140 Via state tax filing
Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate Up to $1,000 Ongoing
Oregon Kicker credit Share of $1.4 billion surplus Claimed on state tax return

Details on each below, because the eligibility rules matter more than the headline amounts.

New York: POWER Rebate Checks

The biggest programme on this list by headcount. New York is mailing one-time Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate checks of $100 to $200 to roughly 8.2 million households, funded from a $1 billion allocation in the state budget.

What matters:

  • No application. Checks go out automatically based on your 2024 state tax return.
  • Income limits: up to $150,000 for single filers and $300,000 for married filing jointly. Lower incomes receive the larger amount.
  • You do not need to be a customer of any particular utility. The payment goes to eligible taxpayers, not ratepayers.
  • Mailing runs from late September through December 2026. The state has not published per-household dates, so watch the mail across the whole window before assuming yours is missing.
  • Not taxable by New York State or local government.
  • Dependents are excluded. If someone claimed you on their 2024 return, no check.

This is a different programme from last year’s inflation refund checks, which used 2023 returns. Getting one did not affect the other.

New Jersey consolidated its property tax relief into a single combined application called the PAS-1, and the deadline is 2 November 2026. That is the date to act on.

The three programmes it covers:

ANCHOR pays up to $1,750 to eligible homeowners and renters. This year’s payments began 15 September 2026.

Senior Freeze reimburses eligible seniors for property tax increases. Payments began in July.

StayNJ provides additional relief for senior homeowners, paid quarterly. Combined relief across the programmes is capped at $6,500.

Renters qualify for ANCHOR, which surprises people every year. If you rented in New Jersey during the qualifying period, file the PAS-1 before 2 November.

Alaska: Permanent Fund Dividend

Free Eligibility Check

These are recommended resources based on the topic of this article. We only suggest free, official, or widely trusted services.

Alaska’s annual PFD is $1,000 for 2026, plus a one-time $200 energy relief payment, for $1,200 total.

Payment dates: applicants determined eligible by 18 September are paid on 1 October. Those determined eligible by 12 October are paid on 22 October.

Eligibility requires Alaska residency throughout 2025 and intent to remain. The application window for 2026 has passed; if you applied, these are the dates your money moves.

Colorado: Two Separate Things

The PTC rebate pays up to $1,178 a year toward property tax, rent and heating costs. It is limited to full-year residents who are 65 or older, surviving spouses 58 or older, or disabled. Applications are accepted on a long window and paid in instalments.

TABOR refunds go to everyone who files, but the surplus is small this year. Expect roughly $40 to $140 depending on income and filing status, far below the $800-plus refunds of recent years.

Pennsylvania and Oregon

Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate pays up to $1,000 to eligible seniors, widows and widowers 50 or older, and adults with disabilities. It was expanded recently, so people turned down years ago may qualify now.

Oregon’s kicker returns over $1.4 billion of surplus revenue to taxpayers, claimed as a credit on your state return rather than arriving as a separate check.

What About Federal Checks?

Three things are circulating, and they are in three different categories.

Real and starting soon: the $500 ACA rebate. The administration announced $500 rebate checks beginning in October 2026 for roughly one million Affordable Care Act enrollees. The eligibility is narrow: only people in the 30 states using the federal exchange who did not receive premium subsidies. Most ACA enrollees are subsidised and will not get this.

Proposed and conditional: the $5,000 dividend. On 9 September 2026 the President promised a $5,000 payment to every adult citizen, explicitly conditional on his party winning both chambers of Congress in November. There is no legislation, no funding mechanism and no eligibility rule. The House Speaker has said it would need congressional approval. It is a campaign pledge, not a programme, and nothing can be claimed or registered for.

Already finished: the $1,776 warrior dividend. Paid in December 2025 to about 1.45 million service members from a congressionally approved military housing supplement. If you see pages inviting you to claim it now, they are a year late or worse.

The Viral Numbers, Decoded

Specific dollar amounts circulate on social media as “new stimulus checks”. Most are real figures wearing the wrong label:

  • $1,702 — Alaska’s 2024 Permanent Fund Dividend. Real, past, Alaska only. The 2026 amount is $1,200.
  • $2,000 tariff rebate — floated publicly in late 2025, never implemented.
  • DOGE dividend — proposed in early 2025, never implemented.
  • $1,390 and similar amounts — no federal programme matches these. They circulate attached to fake claim portals.

The pattern to watch for: a specific dollar figure, urgency, and a link to “claim” or “register”. No legitimate government payment on this page requires registering through a third-party site. State rebates arrive automatically or through the state’s own revenue department. Our guide to what real government payments look like covers the scam patterns in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a federal stimulus check in 2026?

No. The last federal stimulus payments went out in 2021 and the claim window has closed. The $5,000 dividend in the news is a conditional campaign pledge with no legislation behind it.

Who gets the New York POWER check?

New York residents who filed a 2024 state return with income up to $150,000 single or $300,000 married filing jointly, and who were not claimed as a dependent. Checks of $100 to $200 mail automatically from late September through December 2026.

What is the New Jersey deadline?

2 November 2026 for the PAS-1 combined application, which covers ANCHOR, Senior Freeze and StayNJ. Renters can qualify for ANCHOR, not just homeowners.

Is the $500 Obamacare rebate real?

Yes, announced for October 2026, but narrow: it goes only to ACA enrollees in the 30 federal-exchange states who paid full price without premium subsidies. Around one million people qualify. Subsidised enrollees do not.

Is the $5,000 Trump dividend real?

It is a real proposal, not an approved payment. It was announced as conditional on the November election result, has no legislation or funding mechanism, and cannot be claimed, registered for or applied to. Treat any site offering to sign you up as a scam.

Do I have to apply for these state payments?

Depends on the state. New York and Colorado’s TABOR are automatic via tax filings. New Jersey, Colorado’s PTC and Pennsylvania require applications. Alaska’s application window for 2026 has closed.

Are these payments taxable?

It varies. New York’s POWER check is exempt from state and local tax. Federal treatment of state payments differs by programme, so check the guidance your state issues with the payment.

One Honest Rule for All of It

Every real payment on this page comes either automatically or through a state revenue department you can reach directly. Nothing requires a third-party portal, a fee, or your details on a site you have never heard of.

If your state is not listed here, it is not currently sending general payments, whatever a video told you. For programmes you may actually qualify for, our free eligibility checker takes about two minutes.
