What the POWER Check Is
New York is mailing one-time energy rebate checks of $100 to $200 to roughly 8.2 million households, starting from 21 September 2026 and continuing through December.
The programme is called the Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate, or POWER, and it comes from a $1 billion allocation in the 2026-27 state budget, passed as relief against rising utility and energy costs.
Three things define how it works, and they answer most of the questions people have:
- It is automatic. There is no application, no signup, and no portal. Eligibility comes from your 2024 New York State tax return.
- It arrives as a paper check in the mail, not a direct deposit and not a credit on your utility bill.
- It has nothing to do with which utility you use. You do not need to be a customer of any particular company, because the payment goes to eligible taxpayers rather than ratepayers.
Who Qualifies
Not sure if you qualify for benefits? Check in under 2 minutes — it's free, private, and shows estimated amounts.
Eligibility is based entirely on your 2024 New York State income tax return:
- You were a full-year New York resident in 2024
- You filed a 2024 state return
- Your income was within the limits: up to $150,000 for single filers and up to $300,000 for married filing jointly
- You were not claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s 2024 return
That last one catches people. Students and adult children claimed as dependents do not receive a check, whatever their own income was.
How Much You Get
Payments are $100 or $200 depending on income and filing status, with lower incomes receiving the larger amount.
The state determines your amount from the return you already filed. There is nothing to calculate, claim or optimise; the figure is set.

See What I Qualify For →🔒 Free · Private · Takes 2 minutesChecks are being mailed in batches from 21 September through December 2026.
The state has not published a schedule of who gets paid when. There is no lookup by name, county or income band. Two neighbours with identical circumstances may receive their checks months apart, and that is normal for this programme.
The practical consequence: do not conclude your check is missing until the mailing window has closed. A December arrival is as normal as a September one.
If you moved since filing your 2024 return
The check goes to the address on file with the state Tax Department. If you have moved, updating your address with the Tax Department is the one action worth taking. USPS mail forwarding helps, but government checks are frequently marked “do not forward”, so updating at the source is safer.

Several similar-sounding programmes exist, and mixing them up produces most of the confusion online.
It is not last year’s inflation refund check. Those were based on 2023 returns and were a separate programme. Receiving one has no bearing on the other.
It is not a utility bill credit. Some state energy measures are applied directly to bills by the utility. POWER is a mailed check, and your utility company has nothing to do with it. Calling your utility about it will get you nowhere, because they have no information.
It is not recurring. This is a one-time payment from a one-time budget allocation. No POWER check is currently scheduled for next year.
It is not taxable in New York. The budget legislation exempts it from both state and local income tax.
The Scam Version Is Already Circulating
Any programme mailing money to eight million people attracts imitators, and the pattern is predictable: texts and emails claiming your POWER payment is “pending verification”, links to claim or track your check, and requests for bank details to “switch to direct deposit”.
Every one of those is fake, and the reason is structural: there is nothing to verify, claim, track or switch. The programme has no application, no portal and no direct deposit option. The state already has everything it needs from your 2024 return.
The Tax Department will not text you about this payment. Anything asking you to act is a scam by definition.

Thousands of people miss benefits they qualify for. Check now and see your estimated monthly amount.
Check My Benefits in 2 Minutes →Wait until the mailing period ends in December before treating the check as missing. Then check three things in order:
- Did you file a 2024 New York return? No return, no check. Late filers may not be in the payment file.
- Was your income within the limits, and were you claimed as anyone’s dependent?
- Is your address current with the Tax Department?
If all three check out and nothing has arrived by year end, contact the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance directly. Go to the department itself rather than any third-party site offering to trace it.
If $200 Does Not Touch Your Actual Energy Problem
A one-time check covers roughly a month of electricity for many households. If your energy costs are the real issue, two programmes do more and run all winter:
HEAP, New York’s version of the federal LIHEAP programme, helps with heating bills and emergencies, and opens for the season in autumn. Funding is finite and stops when exhausted, so early applications matter. Our LIHEAP guide covers how it works.
Utility payment plans and shut-off protections exist in New York regardless of any rebate, and enrolling in a hardship programme before missing a payment is far easier than after.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will my New York POWER check arrive?
Sometime between late September and December 2026. The state has not published individual dates, and there is no tracking tool. A December arrival is normal.
How much is the POWER rebate?
$100 or $200, depending on your income and filing status on your 2024 state return. Lower incomes receive the larger amount.
Do I need to apply?
No. It is automatic based on your 2024 New York State tax return. There is no application, and any site offering one is a scam.
Who is eligible?
Full-year 2024 New York residents who filed a 2024 state return with income up to $150,000 single or $300,000 married filing jointly, and who were not claimed as a dependent.
Is the check taxable?
Not by New York State or local governments. The exemption is written into the budget legislation that created the programme.
Does it matter which utility company I use?
No. The payment is based on your tax return, not your utility account. You qualify the same whether you use RG&E, NYSEG, Con Edison or anyone else.
I was claimed as a dependent in 2024. Do I get one?
No. Being claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s 2024 return disqualifies you under the programme rules.
Is there a POWER check next year?
Nothing is scheduled. This is a one-time payment from a one-time $1 billion budget allocation.
The One Thing Worth Doing
If you have moved since filing your 2024 return, update your address with the state Tax Department. Everything else about this payment happens on its own.
