Requirements verified against 38 CFR 4.16 and VA claims sources. Reviewed October 2026.
TDIU, Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability, pays the full 100 percent compensation rate to veterans whose service connected conditions prevent them from holding substantial work, even when their rating on paper is 60 or 70 percent. It is among the most valuable benefits in the VA system and among the least claimed, because the VA rarely volunteers it and the combined rating math makes reaching 100 the ordinary way nearly impossible. This page covers the two eligibility gates, the grouping rules that help you clear them, the evidence that wins, and the work question everyone asks.
What TDIU Pays
The 100 percent rate, currently $3,938.58 monthly for a veteran alone and more with dependents, from the same rates table as a schedular 100, tax free, on the same monthly schedule. A veteran rated 70 percent who wins TDIU roughly doubles the monthly payment.
The Two Gates of Schedular TDIU

Under 38 CFR 4.16(a), you clear the percentage gate with either:
- One service connected disability rated 60 percent or higher, or
- Two or more service connected disabilities with a combined rating of 70 percent or higher, at least one of them rated 40 percent or higher.
And a set of grouping rules makes the gates wider than they look: for the 60 or 40 percent threshold, disabilities of one or both arms or legs including the bilateral factor, disabilities from a common cause or single accident, disabilities of a single body system, multiple injuries incurred in action, and multiple disabilities from time as a prisoner of war each count as one disability. A veteran whose back injury and resulting leg nerve conditions all trace to one in service accident may clear the 40 percent piece as a single grouped disability even though no individual rating reaches it.
Below the Gates: Extraschedular TDIU
Miss the percentages and the door does not close: extraschedular TDIU under 4.16(b) has no rating floor. The VA refers qualifying cases to the Director of Compensation Service for an opinion on whether your conditions prevent substantially gainful work, and granted extraschedular TDIU pays the identical 100 percent rate. It is harder to win and entirely real.

See What I Qualify For →🔒 Free · Private · Takes 2 minutesThe heart of every TDIU claim is whether your service connected conditions prevent you from securing and following substantially gainful employment, roughly meaning steady work paying above the poverty line. Marginal work does not defeat the claim: odd jobs, sheltered positions, or a protected job a sympathetic employer carries you through generally do not count as substantially gainful. Age and non service conditions are excluded from the analysis, which cuts both ways: the case must rest on the service connected conditions alone.

TDIU files on Form 21-8940, with employment history, education, and why work ended, and Form 21-4192 goes to your last employer for their account. The winning evidence pattern: medical records and opinions tying the inability to work to the service connected conditions specifically, work history showing the decline, and statements from you, family, and former employers describing the functional reality. A free accredited VSO, the network in our claims guide, materially improves TDIU claims, and a denial runs through the same three lanes in our appeals guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work at all on TDIU?
Marginal employment, generally below poverty line earnings or sheltered work, is permitted. Substantially gainful employment is not, and returning to it triggers reevaluation, so the honest answer is that TDIU is for veterans whose working life is genuinely over or nearly so.
Is TDIU permanent?
It can become effectively permanent, and after 20 years the total rating gains strong protection, but the VA can review it, including an annual employment questionnaire in earlier years. Continued unemployability continues the benefit.
Does TDIU come with the same extras as a schedular 100?
Largely yes: the same monthly rate, and access to major ancillary benefits including dependents education and CHAMPVA in qualifying permanent and total cases. The rate itself is identical by regulation.
Can I get TDIU and Social Security disability together?
Yes, they are separate systems with separate checks, and an SSDI award based on the same conditions is strong supporting evidence, though neither decision binds the other. Our SSDI guide covers that parallel track.
My combined rating is 70 but the VA never mentioned TDIU. Why?
Because it usually will not: TDIU is typically raised by the veteran or inferred from evidence of unemployability in the file. If your conditions ended your working life, raising it explicitly on 21-8940 is your move, not waiting.

If service connected conditions ended your ability to hold real work, TDIU is the benefit built for you, and it starts when you raise it.
