VA Disability Payment Schedule 2026 and 2027

Researched from official sources including Benefits.gov, SSA.gov, HHS.gov, and HUD.gov. Benefit amounts and eligibility rules change regularly - always confirm details on official .gov websites before applying. Last updated: September 2026

Dates verified against the VA payment rules and the federal calendar for 2026 and 2027. Reviewed October 2026.

The VA disability payment schedule works differently from Social Security, and the difference confuses veterans every single month. VA compensation is paid in arrears: the money for a given month arrives at the start of the next one. Your September benefit lands on October 1. This page lists every VA disability payment date through the end of 2027, explains the rule behind the odd looking dates, and covers when the annual COLA actually reaches your deposit.

The Rule: First Business Day of the Following Month

VA disability compensation for a month is paid on the first business day of the month after it. When that first day is a weekend or federal holiday, the VA pays on the last business day of the month you are being paid for, which means the money arrives a few days early.

That early shift is why some months show a deposit on the 30th or 31st and the next month shows nothing on the 1st. You were already paid. Twelve payments a year, every year.

Benefit for Arrives Why
September 2026 Thursday, October 1 Normal date
October 2026 Friday, October 30 November 1 is a Sunday
November 2026 Tuesday, December 1 Normal date
December 2026 Thursday, December 31 January 1 is a holiday

October and December 2026 each show two deposits, and November and January each show none. If you also budget around a spouse’s Social Security, note that their calendar shifts differently, which we cover in the Social Security payment schedule.

Full 2027 VA Disability Payment Schedule

Benefit for Arrives
January 2027 Monday, February 1
February 2027 Monday, March 1
March 2027 Thursday, April 1
April 2027 Friday, April 30
May 2027 Tuesday, June 1
June 2027 Thursday, July 1
July 2027 Friday, July 30
August 2027 Wednesday, September 1
September 2027 Friday, October 1
October 2027 Monday, November 1
November 2027 Wednesday, December 1
December 2027 Thursday, December 30

Two dates in 2027 deserve a circle. April 30 and July 30 are early arrivals, so April and July show double deposits while May and August show none. And the December 2027 benefit arrives December 30, two days early, because January 1, 2028 falls on a Saturday and the holiday is observed on Friday, December 31.

VA disability rates rise by the same cost of living adjustment as Social Security, and the timing works in veterans’ favor. The 2027 COLA is announced on October 14, 2026, takes effect for VA rates on December 1, 2026, and first appears in the payment that arrives December 31, 2026, the deposit covering December.

So the December 31 deposit is the first one at the new 2027 rate, a full month before most Social Security recipients see their increase. Our 2027 COLA tracker carries the official percentage from announcement day.

After a new grant or a rating increase, the arrears rule sets your expectations. Compensation begins the first day of the month after your effective date, and your first regular deposit follows the schedule above. Retroactive pay for the months between your effective date and the decision typically arrives as a separate deposit, often within 15 days of the decision letter, and sometimes before the letter itself shows up.

If your deposit is smaller than the rate tables suggest, common reasons include a drill pay offset for reservists, recoupment of separation pay, or garnishment for support orders. The decision letter’s payment section itemizes what applies to you.

If Your VA Payment Does Not Arrive

  • Check the tables first. The end of month early arrivals explain nearly every “missing” payment on the 1st.
  • Check your payment history at va.gov under your disability benefits profile.
  • Confirm your bank account on file with the VA is open and current. Update it at va.gov or by phone before the 10th to affect the next payment.
  • Then call the VA at 1-800-827-1000, weekdays, to report a missing payment.

If a delay leaves you short, veterans have options beyond the VA, including emergency rent help where SSVF operates and the one time funds in our hardship assistance guide.

VA compensation does not count as earned income, which surprises people in the best way: it does not reduce Social Security benefits, and many disabled veterans receive both. If that is you, your household runs on two calendars, this one and the SSDI schedule or retirement schedule. VA compensation is also excluded from income for some assistance programs but counted for others, including SNAP in most cases, whose deposit dates depend on your state. Veterans on very limited incomes should also look at SSI, which can stack with a low VA rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my VA payment a month behind?

It is not behind. VA compensation is paid in arrears by design, so each month’s benefit arrives at the start of the following month. Every veteran is paid on the same schedule.

What time of day does VA disability hit the bank?

Deposits release overnight before the payment date and most banks show the money by early morning. Some banks post government deposits a day or two early when they receive the file ahead of schedule.

Do all veterans get paid on the same day?

Yes. Unlike Social Security’s birth date groups, every VA disability recipient is paid on the same date each month, the dates in the tables above.

When do the new 2027 VA rates start?

The 2027 COLA takes effect December 1, 2026 and first appears in the deposit that arrives December 31, 2026. The percentage is announced October 14, 2026.

Does VA disability affect my Social Security payment date or amount?

Neither. The two systems are independent: VA compensation does not reduce Social Security retirement or SSDI, and each benefit keeps its own payment calendar.

The Bottom Line

One rule runs the whole VA calendar: first business day of the following month, paid early when that day hits a weekend or holiday. Circle October 30 and December 31, 2026, then April 30, July 30, and December 30, 2027 as the early dates, and remember the December 31 deposit is the first at the new COLA rate. This page updates every year as the federal calendar rolls over.
