Dates verified against the official Social Security Administration payment calendar for 2026 and 2027. Reviewed October 2026.
Your Social Security payment schedule depends on one thing most people never think about: the day of the month you were born. The Social Security Administration staggers payments across three Wednesdays each month, and once you know your group, you can predict your deposit date years in advance. This page lists every payment date for the rest of 2026 and all of 2027, including the handful of dates that shift because of holidays.

How the Social Security Payment Schedule Works
If you started receiving benefits after May 1997, your payment day is set by your birth date:
| Born on the | You are paid on the |
|---|---|
| 1st through the 10th | Second Wednesday of each month |
| 11th through the 20th | Third Wednesday of each month |
| 21st through the 31st | Fourth Wednesday of each month |
Two groups follow a different rule. If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security arrives on the 3rd of the month. And SSI itself is paid on the 1st. We cover that calendar in detail in our SSI payment schedule guide.
When any payment date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the SSA pays on the business day before it. You never wait longer because of a holiday. You get paid earlier.

| November 2026 | November 10 (Tuesday) | November 18 | November 25 |
| December 2026 | December 9 | December 16 | December 23 |
Here is the important part for November. The second Wednesday falls on November 11, which is Veterans Day. Because of the holiday rule, the first group is paid on Tuesday, November 10 instead. It is the only shifted Wednesday until 2028, so if your deposit shows up a day early that month, nothing is wrong.

See What I Qualify For →🔒 Free · Private · Takes 2 minutesIf you claimed before May 1997 or receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security payment arrives on the 3rd, moved earlier when the 3rd is a weekend or holiday. For the rest of 2026 that means October 2, November 3, and December 3.
January 2027 is the strange one. January 3 is a Sunday, and January 1 is the New Year holiday, so the January 2027 payment for this group arrives on Thursday, December 31, 2026. Your bank statement will show two payments in December 2026 and none in January. You still receive twelve payments for the year. The same thing happens to SSI recipients that month.

The Social Security cost of living adjustment for 2027 is announced on October 14, 2026, and it applies starting with the January 2027 payment. For the birth date groups, that means the higher amount first arrives on January 13, 20, or 27, 2027. For the group paid on the 3rd, the raised January payment is the one that lands early on December 31, 2026.
We break down the announcement, the numbers behind it, and what it means for your monthly amount in our 2027 COLA guide, which includes a calculator that shows your new payment.
What to Do If Your Payment Is Late
The SSA asks you to wait three additional mailing days before reporting a missing payment. In practice, direct deposits almost never go missing. When something looks wrong, work through this list:
- Check today against the tables above. Most “missing” payments are just a misremembered date or a holiday shift.
- Log in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov and check the payment status shown there.
- Confirm your bank details did not change. A closed account is the most common real cause of a delayed deposit.
- After three business days, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213, weekdays.
If a late payment leaves you short on essentials, our guides to emergency hardship help and rent assistance cover the programs that can bridge a bad week.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time of day does Social Security hit your bank account?
Deposits are released to banks overnight and most people see the money by early morning on their payment date. The exact posting time depends on your bank, not the SSA. Some banks post a day early when they receive the payment file ahead of the official date.
Why did my payment come on a Tuesday in November 2026?
November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day and falls on the second Wednesday. The SSA pays the business day before a holiday, so the first birth date group is paid Tuesday, November 10. The other two groups are unaffected that month.
Do Social Security and SSI arrive on the same day?
Not usually. SSI is paid on the 1st and Social Security on a Wednesday or the 3rd depending on your situation. If you receive both, your Social Security comes on the 3rd and your SSI on the 1st, so you get two separate deposits each month.
Will the 2027 payment dates change after the COLA announcement?
No. The COLA changes the amount, never the dates. The schedule above is fixed for the year regardless of what the adjustment turns out to be.
Can I change which day I get paid?
No. Your payment day is assigned by the SSA based on your birth date or when you claimed, and there is no option to pick a different day. What you can control is where it goes, and direct deposit is the fastest and safest option.
The Bottom Line
Find your birth date group once and you know your payment day for years. The only dates worth circling are November 10, 2026, the single holiday shift, and December 31, 2026, when the January payment arrives early for the 3rd of the month group. Everything else runs like clockwork, and this page will be updated with the 2028 calendar the day the SSA publishes it.
